Incarcerated dancehall artiste Vybz Kartel has been transferred from the Horizon Adult Remand Centre to the maximum security Tower Street Adult Correctional Centre, we have been reliably informed.

We understands that the controversial entertainer, whose real name is Adijah Palmer, was removed from the Spanish Town Road, Kingston-based Horizon facility and transferred to the Tower Street correctional facility in downtown Kingston under heavy police guard on Tuesday.

Details as to why he was moved are still unclear.

There has been speculation that he was removed because of a suspected breach committed at Horizon Adult Remand Centre. We was informed on Wednesday morning that senior officials at the facility were locked in a meeting and could not comment on the development.

Several calls to Ina Hunter, Commissioner of Corrections, were also unsuccessful.

Following a 65-day trial said to be the longest in Jamaica’s history, Kartel and cronies Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell; Kahira Jones; and Andre St John were sentenced to life imprisonment for the August 2011 murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams.

Kartel and his three co-convicts have filed appeals against their incarceration and sentences.

Despite his incarceration, Vybz Kartel still dominates the airwaves in Jamaica wiith new releases said to be recorded before he was locked up.
Pearnel Charles Jr., the junior national security minister, confirmed that ‎Kartel, was transferred on Tuesday.

“I wasn’t given that information as to why,” Charles Jr. said.

A prison source says Kartel, a dancehall artiste, has been transferred to Tower Street for “confinement”.
Meanwhile, Charles Jr. He told THE STAR ONLINE that Commissioner of Corrections Ina Hunter is the best person to say why Kartel was transferred.

Kartel has been at Horizon since 2011.
Following his conviction and sentencing in April 2014, he was returned to that facility where he had started serving his life sentence with 35 years before he becomes eligible for parole.

Meanwhile, the transfer of the ‘World Boss’ coincides with mounting concerns that he is apparently recording songs while incarcerated at Horizon.

“There is a facility at one of the institutions that allows persons to do recordings that would aid in rehabilitation, through music – something that we encourage,” Charles said.

Dancehall entertainer Vybz Kartel as he left the Home Circuit Court on Thursday March 6, 2014.
He told THE STAR ONLINE that the questions being raised about Kartel recording from prison are unrelated to that rehabilitation programme.
“I think what you are referring to is the notion that somebody is, in a clandestine way, recording music that is then being sold out of the regulations. That is something, if it is being done, that we would have to regulate. But I have not received anything to that effect, coming to me officially,” the minister said.

Kartel’s attorney, Tom Tavares Finson, also confirmed that the dancehall star was transferred but said he did not know why.

On Tuesday he told THE STAR ONLINE “I have no idea, nor do I care” whether Kartel is recording music from prison
